Our Role in Society

Volunteers preventing and transforming food waste in Cyprus to preserve local resources across the island.

Why Food Waste?

Any food product that gets produced requires water, energy, fertilisers, packaging and a method of transportation. The acquisition of all of the above releases Greenhouse Gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, both of which enhance Climate Change and alter our natural environment.

The agricultural sector alone produces 24% of global CO2 emissions¹, while a third of the food produced for human consumption gets wasted. To place a value on it, that amounts to 1.3 BILLION TONNES of food wasted every year².

Our base of operations, the Republic of Cyprus, ranks 3rd amongst the highest food-wasters in the EU, with an average of 327 kg of food waste per person per year.

Our Values

We

Our Vision

  • Expand to further markets covering the whole island, leaving no-one behind.
  • Prevent & Reduce food waste from the producer to the end-user.
  • Transform mindsets around food by re-introducing it as a resource.
  • Identify potential activities generating food waste and through discussion panels and workshops demonstrate ways to prevent it.
  • Provide the space for individuals to develop soft-skills by holding onto market operation roles.
  • Engage and connect community members through a hands-on experience aimed at protecting their local environment.
  • Build an open-source statistical database for the amount of fruit and vegetable waste generated per month, sorted in categorised bins.
  • Analyse statistics to provide useful insights to local vendors, public authorities, local NGOs and research institutions.
