Zero Food Waste Cyprus is an umbrella of projects targeting local fruit and vegetable markets to eliminate food waste generation across the island.
Currently, the initiative serves the OXI market in the old city centre of South Nicosia (OXI Market)
As the team is growing so is our impact. We aim to grow our network by forming collaborations with public authorities, NGOs and private bodies, solidifying our hopes for a greener Cyprus.
The initiative was sparked by our founder, Alexia, driven by her determination to combat the significant food waste generated across the island. Drawing inspiration from global actions, she adapted these solutions to meet the specific needs of Cyprus.
The first focus was the OXI local fruit and vegetable market. Engaging with vendors directly led to immediate donations, marking the first official collection day of the initiative.
Initially, distributions were made via deliveries until a partnership with CARITAS provided a dedicated space for sharing edible items, cementing the initiative’s presence in the community.
When the initiative reached social media, Alexia’s commitment to reducing food waste resonated with the public, inspiring many to volunteer and actively support the mission. This collective effort helped the initiative flourish.
