Zero Food Waste Cyprus Umbrella
Zero Food Waste Cyprus is an umbrella of projects targeting local fruit and vegetable markets to eliminate food waste generation across the island.
Currently, the initiative serves a market in the old city centre of South Nicosia (Saturday Aftermarket) and a market in Girne (Wasteless Wednesdays).
As the team is growing so is our impact. We aim to grow our network by forming collaborations with public authorities, NGOs and private bodies, solidifying our hopes for a greener Cyprus.
Bringing an Initiative to Life
The initiative was born from the passion of our founder, Alexia, to prevent the vast amounts of food waste generated on the island. Inspired from international actions, she adjusted and tailored them to the needs of Cyprus.
The first target was a local fruit and vegetable market. Sharing the idea to the vendors led to a fruitful outcome with donations starting on-spot. Establishing the first collection day of the initiave.
Distribution was on a delivery-basis at first until a collaboration with CARITAS was formed, offering their space to distribute the edible items. Solidifying the presence of the initiative.
Once the initiative took onto social media, where the community saw the effort and passion of Alexia to reduce food waste and expressed their interest in volunteering alongside her. Embracing and growing the initiative.
